Why pianos are never a standard removal

A full-size upright weighs between 200 and 350 kilograms, and almost all of that weight sits high and to the back. That combination is exactly why pianos get dropped by well-meaning general removals crews. We treat every piano move as its own job, with its own measurements and its own equipment list.

Before the day we ask for the make, model and approximate age, the floor it is on now, the floor it is going to, and photographs of the doorways, stairs and any turns. From that we work out whether the instrument travels upright on skates, on its side on a piano board, or needs additional hands for a difficult staircase.

On site the casework is blanket-wrapped and taped clear of the polish, the lid and fallboard are secured, castors are protected and the whole instrument is strapped to the trolley before it moves. In the van the piano is strapped upright against the bulkhead rails with padding front and back, never laid loose against other furniture.

We move uprights, baby grands and digital pianos across Manchester, Wigan, Leigh, Bolton and Warrington, and we are always happy to tell you honestly when an instrument needs a specialist rigging team rather than a removals crew.

Questions

Piano removals FAQs

How much does it cost to move a piano?

Piano moves are charged at the standard two men and van rate of £70 per hour with a minimum 2 hours booking, as they always need at least two movers. Most local upright moves are completed within two to three hours.

Will my piano need retuning afterwards?

Almost always, yes. Any change of location and humidity affects tuning. We recommend leaving the piano to settle for two weeks in its new room before booking a tuner.

Can you move a piano up or down stairs?

Yes, with the right number of movers and a proper plan. Send us photos of the staircase and we will tell you honestly whether it is a two, three or four-person job.

Do you move grand pianos?

We move baby grands and smaller grands using a piano board. For concert instruments or crane-access jobs we will point you to a specialist rigging team.

Is my piano insured while you move it?

Yes. Goods in transit insurance is included on every piano move, and the instrument is strapped upright against the bulkhead rails with padding front and back.

How far in advance should I book a piano move?

A week's notice is ideal so we can review photos of the access, but we can often cover short-notice piano moves across Wigan, Leigh, Bolton and Manchester within a day or two.
