An upright piano weighs between 180 kg and 300 kg and the weight sits high and to the back. That is why pianos are moved with skates, straps and planning rather than brute force.
How we plan a piano move
We ask for photos of the piano, the room, the doorway and any stairs before quoting. That tells us whether it is a two-man job with skates or whether we need extra hands and a stair-climbing approach.
- Casters checked and locked, lid taped shut
- Corners padded, body blanket-wrapped and strapped
- Skates under the frame for flat runs
- Door frames and bannisters protected before the first lift
Stairs and tight turns
Uprights can be taken down a straight flight safely with two experienced movers and a controlled descent. Winding stairs, split levels and narrow Victorian hallways in Wigan and Leigh add time, so we quote them individually.
After the move: tuning
Every piano goes out of tune when it moves — temperature and humidity change more than the journey does. Let it settle for two weeks in its new room, then book a tuner.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move a piano in Wigan?
Piano moves are charged at our two-mover rate of £70 per hour with a two-hour minimum, plus any floor surcharge where there is no lift.
Do you move baby grand pianos?
Yes — legs and lyre are removed, the body travels on its side on a piano board, and everything is padded and strapped.
